VCA Design Workshop 2012
In conjunction with the Vertical Cities Asia International Design Competition and Symposium 2012, a Vertical Cities Asia Design Workshop will be held at the National University of Singapore from 5 July 2012 to 9 July 2012.
The VCA Design Workshop is titled ‘Everyone Ages’. The purpose of the workshop is to surface issues of aging in society. The post-World War II years between 1946 and 1964 witnessed a dramatic worldwide population increase. The period is also commonly described as the Baby Boomers’ Generation. Many baby boomers are now in their middle ages and entering senior years. With rapidly aging demographic spread, issues related to elderly have moved to the top of social agenda.
Objectives
The objective of the workshop is to tackle the issues of homes for the elderly in societies. In both developed and developing economies there are the homeless and elderly couples who stay alone.
Participants in the workshop will be exploring planning and design strategies relating to psychological as well as physical needs. It is the intention at the workshop to foster understanding on housing trends on elderly people’s wellbeing. It also hopes to promote sustainable design approach in all aspects in parallel to mapping elderly needs.
Workshop Leaders
The workshop shall be led by 3 distinguished urban planners who are also Jury members for Vertical Cities Asia International Design Competition 2012.

Adjunct Professor Tan Cheng Siong, Singapore
Adjunct Professor Tan Cheng Siong is the principal architect of Archurban Architects Planners, Singapore and Archurban Projects Consultancy (Shenzhen) Pte. Ltd., China. He has done more than 200 projects in various countries in South East Asia and China. He is the Head of multiple Urban Planning and Design committees for the Singapore government and an advisory member of the Shenzhen Planning Committee. He has also won numerous awards for Excellence in Master planning and/or Architecture Design in Singapore and China.

Professor Joaquim Sabate, Spain
Professor Joaquim Sabate is the Professor and Chair of Town Planning at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). He is also the Chairman of the European Postgraduate Masters of Urbanism (Universities of Delft, Leuven, Venice and UPC), Founder of the International Laboratory of Cultural Landscapes (MIT‐UPC) and Advisor of the Research and Technology Commission of the Catalan Government, the National University Quality and Accreditation Agency, and some of the Research Councils in Italy, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. He has published more than a hundred of books and articles in specialized journals.

Mr. David Mangin, France
Mr. David Mangin is an architect and urban planner of Seura Architectes Urbanistes. His project for redeveloping the Les Halles area was selected by the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, in 2004. He was also the winner of the Grand Prix de l’Urbanisme Français in 2008 and author of La Ville Franchisée: Formes et structures de la ville contemporaine (Editions de La Villette). He has a keen interest in drawing and some of his sketchpads have been exhibited and published (Le Moniteur, Urbanisme).
Special Guest Lecture
Professor Mooyoung Han of Seoul National University has been invited to deliver a lecture on Urban Water Management at the VCA Workshop. Professor Han is due in Singapore to receive the 2012 IWA Project Innovation Award at East Asia Region during the Singapore Water Week in July.
Professor Han is the Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Seoul National University. He is also the Director of SNU Rainwater Research Center, Chairman of IWA Rainwater Harvesting and Management Specialist Group and President of Rain For All. The awards he received include IWA Project Innovation Award East Asia Regional Award and National Green Technology Award in 2010 and SBS Ecowater Grand Award in 2008.

The VCA Design Workshop is open to students from the VCA participating institutions and the following institutions of the IFoU network.

Cost of participation (including registration fee and accommodation at student hostel): SG$350
For registration, please email your personal details according to the below format to vca@nus.edu.sg. The registration is on a first come first served basis and maximum three students from each of the VCA participating institutions can be enrolled. No group sign up would be accepted. Upon confirmation, you will be contacted by the VCA Secretariat for arrangement of payment.
